Coffee Ice Cream

Caffeine lovers rejoice! This coffee ice cream is for you.

This ice cream is super easy to make and so tasty. I love using a nice full strength coffee bursting with caffeine. It makes for an incredible ice cream that has an added benefit of giving you an energy boost.

Coffee beans and ground coffee on a bench

Everyone has different opinions on what a good coffee tastes like. The recommended amount of coffee in this ice cream can easily be adjusted to your taste. I used a 1/2 cup but you can reduce to 1/4 cup for a mild flavoured ice cream. Add 3/4 cup of coffee for a “knock your socks off” ice cream dessert.

Warning: Don’t eat this one just before bed if caffeine keeps you awake. I had this ice cream the first time and was lying up for hours!

If you’re more of a beer fan, why not try my beer ice cream recipe that I promise you’ll enjoy.

Coffee Ice Cream Recipe

Prep Time: 20 mins
Yields: 1L (1Qt)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup thickened cream (heavy cream)
  • 1 cup full cream milk (whole milk)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup coffee of your choice
  • 4 egg yolks

Method

  1. Add cream, milk, sugar and coffee to a medium saucepan and, stirring frequently, heat until simmering. Don't allow to boil.
  2. Whisk eggs in a separate bowl until pale in colour.
  3. Slowly pour 1 cup of the heated milk mixture into the yolks all the while whisking; then pour back into the milk mixture while continuing to whisk.
  4. Continue heating and stirring the milk mixture on a medium heat until it thickens and can coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes then pour through a strainer. Add to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 3 hours. Preferably overnight.
  6. Add ice cream base to your ice cream maker and churn following the manufacturer's instructions.
  7. Once churned, freeze for at least 3 hours until hardened.

Additional Info

Reduce the coffee by 1/4 cup for a subtle tasting coffee ice cream. Add 1/4 cup for a stronger version.

Love a good coffee ice cream. I’d add some coffee/chocolate liquor to make it a bit more grown up treat ?

I think I need to put my ice cream maker base in the freezer. I love coffee and ice cream, and don’t know how I haven’t made this yet.

My daughter loves coffee ice cream. And I happen to have one of those coffee makers on your pics. The 3-cup one. I’m definitely saving this recipe. I’ve never made ice cream before but there’s always a first time. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for visiting Yesenia. Those coffee machines are great aren’t they, old school. My wife has a collection of them in different sizes lol.

Ok, I’m probably going to be stoned for saying this, but coffee isn’t a flavor I like (I know – I’m crazy). However, I know so many people do, and this recipe looks delicious and easy to do – I’m pinning it to share with my friends who enjoy coffee!

Hi Heather, until a couple of years ago I would have agreed with you. I hated coffee. It’s a flavour that one day I just decided was okay – must be old age? Thanks for visiting and for sharing 🙂
